Programme

Our programme introduces graduate students to basic ideas about conducting doctoral and advanced research and aims to empower researchers to combine competence in traditional disciplinary skills with the formulation of new questions.

Students will learn methods for reading scientific papers, selecting research topics, devising research questions, planning research, analysing experimental results, and synthesising broader theories. Furthermore, participants will receive metho- dological training that encourages them to broaden the range of information material they consider and the scope of questions they ask, while maintaining the highest standard of academic quality.

The programme will be delivered in blended learning mode, involving online distance learning and four face-to-face sessions at Danube University Krems, Austria.

Job description and job opportunities

The programme is designed for university graduates who intend to apply for thesis and dissertation programmes and develop skills in research, evaluation and reflection on practice.

The certificate offers a comprehensive education and qualification in all aspects of scientific research, while enabling students to meet particular methodological requirements for doctoral programmes and thesis programmes in all fields.

Curriculum

M1: Research Design, Methodological Fundamentals and Research Practice
This course provides an overview of the issues involved in research design and practice. The formulation of a researchable question/hypothesis and translating it into an appropriate and practicable research design is explored.

M2: Quantitative Methodology
The primary goal of the course is to learn how to use quantitative tools to answer research questions. By learning the fundamentals, students should also be able to improve the design of their research project

M3: Qualitative Methodology

M4: Academic Writing
This course aims to demystify the writing process and teach the fundamentals of effective scientific writing. Students will be equipped with tools and strategies for generating ideas, getting started, focusing and structuring material, early drafting, reviewing and editing at different levels writing "academically"

M5: Philosophy of Research, Philosophy of Science
The module covers the concepts that underpin educational and social research and helps students to explore the relevance of these issues for their own research. Students will be able to explain requirements of scientific work, describe their own way on science, apply scientific theory to practical problems and give account of fundamental concepts of philosophy of science.

M6: Ethics in Research
Researchers/Students will be asked to think about the range of actions that count as responsible conduct for the ethical researcher as well as identify the rules that researchers are expected to follow. This course encourages researchers, and requires students to think critically about what it means to be an ethical research.

Organisation

Danube University Krems has specialized in postgraduate academic studies and offers exclusive courses in the fields of health and medicine, communication and globalization, business and law, education and media as well as of arts, culture and building. Being a European model project, Danube University Krems combines high quality in education, research and consulting with excellent customer orientation and service. More than 5,000 students from 80 countries are enrolled in over 150 academic courses.

Danube University Krems was founded in 1994 and teaching started here in 1995 with three courses and 93 students. The university is the largest provider of postgraduate continuing education in Austria and one of the leading competence centers of academic continuing education in central Europe.

Danube University Krems is located in one of Europe’s most beautiful cultural landscapes, the Wachau region along the Danube, which has been named a world cultural heritage site by the UNESCO. A renovated tobacco factory dating back to the onset of the 20th century and new buildings on Campus Krems provide students and educators with an open, innovative, and motivational atmosphere for research and studying. The new campus, which was opened in 2005, provides the region with a new landmark of international acclaim.

Krems

Krems is a traditional educational town - with 30 schools and high schools attended by more than 10,000 students. Therefore, Krems’ environment is richly furnished with restaurants, hotels, guest-houses and students’ hostels, as well as leisure-time and cultural facilities.

The idyllic environment of the Wachau, its exquisite wines and numerous sports facilities contribute in significant measure to the quality of life of students at the Danube University Krems.

Historic buildings and architecture from the middle-ages in the parts of Krems and Stein show for a meaningful past. The community, already mentioned in 995 as "urbs chremisa", was once the center of salt and wine trading and is one of the oldest towns in the country.

The Danube University of Krems is an ideal starting point for jogging, cycling, playing squash and tennis, or simply for taking a walk through the vineyards. Oarsmen and swimmers can pursuit their hobbies in the nearby Danube River.
